What is Christianity?
Christianity is about Christ
The Gospel is the good news about Jesus Christ. The Lord Jesus is calling you to believe in Him, to learn and obey all that He has commanded His followers. To understand the gospel well you will need a sense of Jesus’ identity, His mission and His call to you.
If you would like to follow Christ, pray this prayer:
O Lord, I am a sinner, in need of your redemption.
Help me to turn to Jesus Christ, open my heart to Him.
I know that He is the only savior, and that He came to give
His life as a ransom for many. Help me to deny myself, take up my cross and follow Him. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Identity
Jesus is the Christ. “Christ” is not a last name. It is the Bible’s way of describing the Prophet, Priest and King who would be anointed to redeem God’s people. Jesus, in His earthly ministry, displayed His power and authority over nature, sin and even death. He also has the authority to teach those who would be reconciled to God. Fully human and fully divine, Jesus Christ is the only mediator between fallen humanity and a holy God.
Mission
Jesus Christ came and died on a cross to rescue us from our sin. He took the punishment we deserve and bore the judgment and wrath of God. This means two things: 1) our sin is a very serious problem. In fact, it is the source of all our other problems and the one problem we cannot solve on our own. 2) Jesus Christ is great Savior. Jesus has freed us from sin, fear and death, reconciling us to God.
Call
Jesus Christ calls us to take up our cross and follow Him. This means that if we want to save our lives we must entrust them to Jesus. It also means that we are no longer the center of our own moral compass, rather Jesus Christ becomes the orienting principle of our lives. To follow Jesus we must deny ourselves, that is, we no longer live for our own glory, but rather for the glory of our Redeemer.
Several times a year First Church offers the Christianity Explored course.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.
